My body is a temple today (Flashback)

Looking after my body & mind should be a core part of my recovery. At present I’m smoking a lot of cigarettes so I don’t want to come across as hypocritical. I  need to remind myself I am not perfect but rather content with making progress. Atomic Habits would quote “Making tiny changes. Remarkable results”. It would encourage you to make yourself 1% better everyday. For me it begins with breakfast. (Ironically I actually skipped breakfast for a few extra hours of self-loathing in bed today.) In CM Athy I get breakfast every morning. I’ve always struggled with self-discipline and eating breakfast every morning outside of residential treatment has always been a struggle for me. Generally I would consider three to four coffees and seven to nine cigarettes in the morning part of my morning routine. I need to work on breaking bad habits and creating new ones.

I’m blessed that when I am sober I take out physically demanding tasks, allowing me to skip the need for the gym. Lately this has changed as I type this so I began my couch to 5k again. Someday I’d like to be in a financial position to go to the Ardilaun Hotel at the weekends. By nourishing the body you are in turn nourishing the mind. Taking supplements such as Centrum will play a part in my recovery too. (Which reminds me, I need to buy more Centrum) I’m making the biggest investment in my lifetime, for once in my life that investment is me. I have a lot of books I wish to read too, mostly categorised as self-help/motivational books. I meditate at present four days a week, a skill I hope I can nurture when I leave here. (Another reminder for me) The more positive changes I can ‘stack’ (Thanks Atomic Habits) the better my recovery will be. Alcohol has been a big depressant in my life to date, so has gambling. I struggle to decipher between the two. Maybe I’m better off addressing them as my addictions and identifying myself as an addict. Self-care will give me a confidence I’ve never had, regular check ups with my GP, psychiatric team and dentist will help too. Meetings in AA, GA & Smart Recovery will become my self prescribed medication to maintain a new, sober and bet free life.
