AddictionFast ForwardLiving Sober 2 Shanley July 1, 2025
I’m a very analytical human being, it can be my downfall at times. I have often in the past gone to a meeting a day early just to time myself so I was prepared for the following day’s meeting. I could break down everything into intervals. That’s probably why I’m so happy with my new pay as you go meter. It gives me fifteen minute intervals of my electricity. In recent days I have planned my recovery down to a tee. I have made new weekly budgets and built a calendar of my day to day plans.
In Atomic Habits I learned about making things easy. There are people out there who go to sleep in their running gear so all they have to do is jump out of bed, put their runners on and they’re ready to go. The easier we make recovery the higher chance we have of success. For me for example I have been looking at meetings that appeal to me. I have friends who go to a meeting thirty five minutes away from my apartment which is fine when the sun is splitting the rocks like it is now. We live in Ireland however and rain is always around the corner. I found a meeting five minutes from my house, I may not know anybody at the meeting but it makes consistent attendance easier. That is why I have chosen to go to the meeting closer to me.
Other areas in life that will make my life easier include meal preps, I’m currently considering signing up to Hello Fresh. I live right beside a running track too, it’s a no brainer what my exercise regime should look like. The cleaner I keep my house too gives me more time to enjoy working on projects like this one. Life is precious, I have had a lot of good friend’s I have lost through the years. The easier we make our lives the more time we have as Mike Posnor once said ‘Live. Live. Live.’ This website is my legacy, with my addictions and mental health challenges I could be dead by tomorrow. Without sounding too grim we all die. The easier we can make the mundane parts of life it allows us free up time to do the things we love. Addiction is far from easy, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. As I’ve said before, not even my ex-principal. Addiction consumes all your time, when you’re not giving into addiction you can constantly be on guard. I have never experienced real long term sobriety but they say recovery gets easier as time goes by. You become less vigilant and more able to enjoy life. Addiction to me is the opposite of easy. Always scheming where your next drink will come from, waiting for the off licence to open (unluckily for me my local shop serves me wine from 8am). The financial problems it brings is horrible too, I have recently had to surrender to working with Mabs to assist me with my financial problems. Relationships are distorted too. Today I’m choosing easy. Today I’m choosing sobriety.
